My Life Through the Troubles

I remember the school days and the homework I got
The shining gold stars for being best of the lot
I remember the summers down at Pickie Pool
To swim there you would need a second skin made of wool
I remember khali suckers, sweethearts and ice cream pokes
The dancing and laughter and the Irish jokes
I remember at Easter walking round Bellevue Zoo
I remember my first girlfriend and my very first kiss
And how it felt inside and how I would wish
I remember the 11th and 12th of July
The bonfires we built and the marching bands cry
I remember the Troubles, the bombs and the guns
The loneliness and pain of the suffering one’s
I remember all those days for the sadness and joy that they give
And I will always remember for as long as I live
